Staff Reporter, Barishal

Two employees of the land office in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal have been withdrawn and attached to the Barishal Deputy Commissioner’s office following allegations of bribery, corruption and other irregularities. A contract driver at the office of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) has also been dismissed.

The Deputy Commissioner’s office issued the order on Sunday, 25 October. Wazirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Ali Suja and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Umme Salma Khanun confirmed the order, Somoyer Konthosor reported.

One of the withdrawn employees is an office assistant at the Shikarpur union land office; the other is a certificate assistant at the office of the Assistant Commissioner (Land).

How it came to light

Several media outlets had earlier reported bribery allegations against the two employees, and a related video circulated widely. There was also an allegation that a businessman was assaulted over filming the alleged bribe. The order followed after the allegations came to the administration’s attention.

The report did not carry any comment from the employees concerned. Withdrawal is an administrative step and does not mean the allegations have been proven.

People facing bribery or harassment in land services can complain to the government hotline 333 or the ACC hotline 106.

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Former Bangladesh Air Force chief Sheikh Abdul Hannan, a retired air chief marshal facing several corruption cases, has been arrested in Qatar, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said.

Qatari law enforcement detained him on 15 October, and Interpol informed the ACC by email, ACC Deputy Director Md Akhtarul Islam told the Indian news agency PTI. The ACC says he left Bangladesh despite a travel ban and pending corruption cases.

Hannan was commissioned as a pilot in 1984. He became the 16th Chief of Air Staff on 12 June 2021 and retired on 11 June 2024.

The allegations

The ACC alleges that Hannan acquired assets worth more than Tk 3.28 crore beyond his known income, and that suspicious transactions of Tk 27.63 crore passed through six of his personal bank accounts.

His wife is also accused in the case. She allegedly acquired more than Tk 1.91 crore in assets beyond her known income with his help, with suspicious transactions of Tk 1.18 crore in 32 accounts in her name. The ACC also says investigators traced assets to Canada and Dubai, and found property registered to their children in three countries.

The ACC approved charges in July 2025 under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Money Laundering Prevention Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act. A court earlier ordered two of his apartments attached and his bank accounts frozen, and in March a Dhaka court ordered the seizure of the couple’s income tax records on two ACC applications.

The report did not say when or how he would be returned to Bangladesh.

Response from the accused

The PTI report did not carry any comment from Hannan or his wife. [For the editor: keep this sentence only if ACM contacts them — “ACM is seeking their comments and will add them if received.” Otherwise delete this bracketed part before publishing.]

A Dhaka court has accepted the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) charge sheet against former law minister Anisul Huq and three others in a case over the alleged acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir accepted the charge sheet on Sunday, 25 October. Anisul Huq, who is in jail, was produced before the court, which issued arrest warrants against the three other accused, who are absconding. ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam confirmed the order, Daily Sun reported.

The other accused are Jebunnesa Begum Huq Koli, the wife of Anisul Huq’s younger brother; his nephew Sheikh Md Iftekharul Islam; and Mohammad Iqbal, described as his cousin.

ACC Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam filed the case on 1 January 2025, and the charge sheet was submitted on 24 September this year.

What the charge sheet says

According to the charge sheet, investigators found evidence that Anisul Huq acquired movable and immovable assets worth Tk 180.85 crore in his own name and through benami ownership, of which assets worth Tk 172.24 crore were inconsistent with his known income.

Assets worth Tk 96.80 crore were in his own name. The remaining Tk 84.05 crore was found in the names of three people allegedly linked to his interests: Tk 23.32 crore with Jebunnesa Begum Huq, Tk 20.71 crore with Sheikh Md Iftekharul Islam and Tk 40.01 crore with Mohammad Iqbal.

Investigators also described transactions of Tk 737.24 crore across 23 bank accounts belonging to Anisul Huq and people and entities allegedly linked to him as unusual and suspicious.

ACC sues Inu, Hasan Mahmud and six others over alleged Tk 6.65 crore embezzlement in Betar mural project

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against eight people, including former information ministers Hasanul Haque Inu and Hasan Mahmud, over the alleged embezzlement of about Tk 6.65 crore in the name of building a bronze mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangladesh Betar.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director Md. Mostafizur Rahman filed the case at the commission’s Integrated District Office, Dhaka-1, on Sunday, 18 October. ACC Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman Khan confirmed the case, Prothom Alo reported.

The other accused are former Betar directors-general A.K.M. Nessar Uddin Bhuiyan and Narayan Chandra Shil, former senior engineer Md. Zakir Hossain, sub-station engineer Mohammad Abdur Rahman, former acting secretary and project steering committee chair Md. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, and project director Probal Kanti Das.

The allegations

According to the case statement, a Tk 7 crore Betar project was proposed in January 2018, and the mural was later added to it. The ACC says project rules allowed only essential components to be added, and the mural was not one of them.

A construction contract worth about Tk 5.78 crore was awarded through a tender in January 2020. By 12 June 2024, the contractor had received nine payments totalling Tk 6,64,94,000.

The ACC says its officials inspected Betar’s Agargaon centre during the inquiry and found no trace of the mural. The case was filed under sections 409 and 109 of the Penal Code and section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947, alleging abuse of power and collusion that caused a loss of public money.

Response from the accused

The Prothom Alo report did not carry any comment from the accused. [For the editor: keep this sentence only if ACM contacts the accused — “ACM is seeking their comments and will add them if received.” Otherwise delete this bracketed part before publishing.]

Filing a case does not mean the allegations are proven. Guilt can only be determined by a court.
